Enyidadomba Foundation in collaboration with Eagles Network and the District Health Directorate of Gomoa Central District, spent this year’s Christmas with the people of Gomoa Esikuma in the Central Region of Ghana. The three bodies organised a free health screening for residents of the aforementioned community and several ailments were treated, while professional counselling and advice was equally rendered.
Hypertension, diabetes, eye diseases among other health problems were all attended to, and in addition, free medicines were given out. Besides the health screening, drinks, water and clothes were also shared to the people of Gomoa Esikuma. Speaking at the program, Dr. Madison Adanusa, Executive Director of Enyidadomba Foundation, gave an account of the activities that took place during the outreach.
“We collaborated with the District Health Directorate of Gomoa Central to make this outreach a reality. We screened about 500 adults for hypertension and diabetes. We managed acute conditions for about 200 people, we also screened the eyes of about 200 adults. We discovered some striking illnesses, the chief of them being high blood pressure”, he said.
He continued that, “About three out of four adults we saw today have abnormal high pressure so that is something that stood out today, so we’ve to educate them on the need to routinely screen for high blood pressure and those who know they have high blood pressure to stick to their medications. We want a healthy people to be productive; we do not want people who will have diseases that they do not know and will only know when complications arise. We do not want them to have issues like stroke, kidney failure and the rest.”
He further mentioned that, “With the eye screening, we had many adults with glaucoma and cataract of various stages and we’re linking with Cape Coast Teaching Hospital for treatment. For those with mild eye diseases, treatments were given. We also dewormed about 200 children above two years, and advised those with hypertension to limit the intake of salt and food additives. Merry Christmas and happy new year in advance to everyone.”
Gomoa Esikuma is a farming community located in the Gomoa Central District of the Central Region. In all, over 650 adults and children were attended to.
